Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo (Quechua: Ollantay Tampu) is an Incavillage and archaeological site, capital of Ollantaytambo district (Urubambaprovince),located in southern Peru, about 90 km northwest of the city Cuzco. Ollantaytambo is called living Inca village. Cuzco, navel of the world, ancient capital of the Tawantinsuyo, due to the four directions to where the Inca empire was extended.
Today it is an important tourist attraction due to its Inca constructions and for being one of the most common starting points of the Inca road to Machu Picchu.
During the Incanato, Pachacuti conquered the region and built the village and a ceremonial center. At the time of the conquest he served as a fort of Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance. In Ollantaytambo there are resistance platforms (to avoid landslides), non-agricultural as in the other archaeological sites of Cuzco. Tourist take the train from this town to ancient site of Machu Picchu.
History:
According to Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, a 16th-century Spanish chronicler, the Inca emperor Pachacútec conquered and destroyed Ollantaytambo and then incorporated it into his empire. Under the rule of the Incas, the village was rebuilt with splendid buildings and the Urubamba River valley was irrigated and provided with platforms; the people served as a shelter for the Inca nobility while the platforms were worked by yanaconas, servants of the emperor. After Pachacútec’s death, the region went into the custody of his panaqa, his family group.
Spiritual:
Andean Spiritual Cosmology: Living in Ayni (Harmony & Reciprocity) with Pachamama. The greatest virtue of their culture is the respect for the Pachamama, as they call Mother Earth in Quechua, whom they thank and bless just as loving and respectful children would do. As the son of Mother Earth and Father Sun, the human being has three fundamental powers: “Munay” the power of the heart, pure love, “Llankay” work, service, and “Llachay” wisdom and awareness.

The MISSION of 3 Mariposas Montessori (3MM) is to co-create with children, parents and teachers a unique early childhood development program that will provide the children of our community with the critical foundation needed for educational success and a happy and healthy life.
The VISION of the school is to replicate this sustainable model throughout the Dominican Republic so that children, parents and teachers may be active leaders in society and take pride in their community.
The “3” in the name of the school reflects the belief that it takes the cooperative work of students, parents and teachers to mold children into responsible citizens in the world around them. Therefore, 3MM offers programs for all three sets of individuals and they are as follows:
MONTESSORI & ART PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN:
Montessori Program: This child-centered, hands-on program for twenty 2 1/2 to 6 year-olds allows the children to thrive. Our classroom environment fosters the fulfillment of the young learnerʼs highest potential – social, emotional, behavioral, physical and intellectual – as a member of a family and a community.
Art Program: As in the Montessori philosophyʼs teaching, the children are given the opportunity to make their own decisions and develop their own interest. While working on art projects they are developing their fine motor skills, cognition, visualization, imagination and many other critical skills needed for success in other areas of the classroom and virtually in life.
EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR PARENTS:
Regular contact is made with the parents and suggestions are given on how to provide a healthier, safer, happier and more educationally centered home for their little ones. 3MMʼs Montessori trained teacher shares ideas and activities that parents can do with their children at home so that their children continue to learn.
TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM:
Regular training is given to the teachers-in-training in order for them to reach a mastery level of the Montessori methodology. Teachers are learning and becoming excited about uniqueness of the Montessori method and are seeing the result of using this method. One crucial lesson the teachers are learning is “to stir up life, but leave it free to develop”. (Maria Montessori)
Here are just a few of the many accomplishments that 3MM has made in the 14 months of operation:
- Children are learning English, developing creative minds in art class, making strong friendships with those of other races, gaining self-confidence, becoming more independent, developing healthy hygiene habits and the list goes on.
- Homes of are being built or renovated by foreign student groups
- Parents are becoming empowered by assisting in the classroom and overseeing fundraising activities
- Dominicans and Haitians are volunteering in the school on a daily basis (which is nearly unheard of in the DR)
- The schoolʼs grounds are being improved – a playground has been built, vegetable gardens have been planted, water and sand tables have been added, screens have been installed, the exterior walls have been painted, and a fence has been put up
- 3MM held its 1st Annual Student Art Show and over 80 people attended from a variety of different countries, which broke down racial, cultural and socio-economic barriers, bringing together individuals from two communities who rarely share the same space.
- The word has spread. 3MM is where parents want their children to be. There is a waiting list of nearly 100 children
